Around 4 am I received a weather alert to expect 1-2 inches of snow north of I-70. I’m south of I-70, so I’m not really concerned about it.
Then around 10 am another alert comes through. It say to expect 2-3 inches of snow in Indy, possibly up to 4 inches, and that it would begin to fall in the afternoon through early evening.
Around noon today I went to Meijer to pick up some steaks for Valentine’s Day dinner, and some other grocery needs as well. An hour passes, I checkout, then am greeted by what looks like a blizzard and already over an inch of snow. When I went in only a few flakes were in the air, and nothing sticking.
I knew snow was expected over a week ago, but it seems a bit silly that we only get a few hours notice of potential snow totals from the big dogs. Publicly we get the typical, “it’s too early to tell” phrase thrown at us if it’s more than a day in advance (except for Fox 59, which normally will go out a bit further than the rest).
Most of us are bright enough to know that the weather is a calculated guessing game, modern day fortune telling if you will. So please, clue us in. If you say a dusting to 6 inches of snow is possible, that’s fine. At least we have a range, albeit a wide one.
Luckily, we have BAM Chase, “amateur” weather “hobbyists”, who have a track record for telling you what the outcomes could be, and they are typically pretty darn close. For this one they say we could see spots of up to 6 inches, so that’s what I’d plan for, then be happy when it’s only 3 or 4.
All of that to say, I am done with winter. I want to get outside into the garden and to the grill. I had planned on grilling the steaks tonight, but we shall have to wait and see how things pan out. Luckily, thunderstorms are in the extended forecast.
