Tomato Harvest: August 20th

August 20, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

Even with some crop damage, we're to the point in the season where we could pick tomatoes and peppers just about every day if we wanted to. Today I opted to pick tomatoes, and ended up with a 15 pound haul. Here's the breakdown: 3 Cherry Tomatoes at 0.90 ounces (these are the first of the volunteer cherry tomatoes, and only account for the few that made it inside, … [Read more...] about Tomato Harvest: August 20th

Garden Haul for August 14th

August 15, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

There is much to report on the garden since the last update, but I'll have to save those for another time. However, tonight we picked quite a few peppers and a few tomatoes. Here's the rundown of that: 66 Jalapeno Peppers, weighing 31.35 ounces 25 Cayenne Peppers, weighing 4.80 ounces 18 Ancho Peppers, weighing 40.20 ounces 12 Red Serrano Peppers, weighing 3.10 … [Read more...] about Garden Haul for August 14th

Photo Garden Tour: End of June 2014

July 1, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

The 2014 garden is in full swing, and here are some photos from yesterday with some highlights of the current progress. This is my first year giving potatoes a whirl, and the Yukon Gold Potatoes are doing their thing. This is much of a learning process for me, but they are clearly growing, so we're at least that far. I'm hoping these turn out excellent, as everyone says home … [Read more...] about Photo Garden Tour: End of June 2014

For The Love of Jalapeños

June 30, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

I picked and cooked the first jalapeño of the season from the garden tonight. (The one in the middle, furthest back.) My oldest son took a bite and said that his "mouth was sweating". He had some milk, then he proceeded to have another. This is how we roll. … [Read more...] about For The Love of Jalapeños

Growing Peas in Indiana

June 26, 2014 by Brian Groce 1 Comment

Last year, well into the planting season, I decided to look into what it takes to grow peas here in Indiana. Looking around, the most valuable resource by far has been the Purdue University Consumer Horticulture website, specifically the Indiana Vegetable Planting Calendar (PDF) they publish. They state that peas should be planted, in the Indianapolis area, from March 20th … [Read more...] about Growing Peas in Indiana

Garden Update: June 18, 2014

June 18, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

Despite some setbacks due to two major hail storms, and just not enough time in the day, the 2014 garden is now in full swing. This year the veggie section was more than doubled, and is all in raised beds. For the most part this is setup as "square foot gardening", which makes things a whole lot easier to plan out, and I have my graphed Moleskine to prove it. Most of the … [Read more...] about Garden Update: June 18, 2014

Seed Starting 2014

March 14, 2014 by Brian Groce Leave a Comment

I've had a home garden ever since I moved into my first house. It started out with mainly tomatoes since that's what I always remembered my folks growing as a kid, and what I knew would grow without much fuss here in Indiana. Over the years I've tried a few different veggies here and there, with peppers becoming my other favorite, AND SUCCESSFUL, crop. Last year I decided … [Read more...] about Seed Starting 2014
