13 Days of Halloween for the Family: Day 13, Scooby-Doo

by Brian Groce on October 31, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the thirteenth day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Scooby-Doo.

When you think of Halloween it’s hard to not think about some iteration of Scooby-Doo and the gang, where everyday is Halloween.  With so many iterations of the show it’s hard to pick one to watch, but here are a few suggestions to get you started.

We hope that you enjoyed our 13 Days of Halloween for the Family over the past two weeks.  If there are any others’ that you would add to the list, please do so.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

13 Days of Halloween for the Family: Day 12, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

by Brian Groce on October 30, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the twelfth day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

As a child this was one of my favorite movies, and is one  of only two films that I’ve seen in theaters three times.  And I must admit, the product placement of Reese’s Pieces and Speak & Spell probably helped to make me a fan of both.

Despite all of the changes through the years of the releases (it’s no longer cool to be a terrorist or a hippie for Halloween, and guns should be replaced with walkie-talkies), this is, and always will be, a classic.

“E.T. Phone Home.”

by Brian Groce on October 29, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the eleventh day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Beetlejuice.

Starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton and directed by Tim Burton, this comedy fantasy will have you laughing.

“Lydia, I have a chance to teach you something here: you have got to take the upper hand in all situations or people, whether they’re dead or alive, will walk all over you.

13 Days of Halloween for the Family: Day 10, The Haunted Mansion

by Brian Groce on October 28, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the tenth day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Disney’s The Haunted Mansion.

Starring Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, Jennifer Tilly, Terence Stamp & Nathaniel Parker, this Disney Theme Parks inspired movie is a fun walk through of the ride.  For those of you who are familiar with the ride, you’ll pick up on some of the details and the characters in the movie such as the Hitchhiking Ghosts.

Some scenes may be a little frightening for the little ones, and there is some coarse language, so you may want to watch it first yourself first.

“They’re not ghosts. We’re just having hallucinations from that dinner that we ate. It was that chicken, it didn’t taste right.”

For the ninth day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Scared Shrekless.

In Scared Shrekless, DreamWorks brings us another great Halloween special, this time featuring the Shrek crew.  If you enjoyed the Shrek movies, or liked Monsters Vs Aliens:  Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space, you’ll enjoy this one.

13 Days of Halloween for the Family: Day 8, Garfield’s Halloween Adventure

by Brian Groce on October 26, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the eighth day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Garfield’s Halloween Adventure.

I recall watching this one air in 1985 and in subsequent years, and 26 years later I’m sharing it with my own children.

Unfortunately this one appears to be out of print now, and a little pricey to purchase, so you may want to check it out from the public library.

“Halloween is my kind of a holiday. Not like those other stupid holidays. I don’t get pine needles in my paws. There’s no dumb bunnies, no fireworks, no relatives, just candy. Boom, you go out, you get candy. It’s as simple as that. ” ~ Garfield

13 Days of Halloween for the Family: Day 7, Coraline

by Brian Groce on October 25, 2011

in Uncategorized

For the seventh day of 13 Days of Halloween for the Family, we recommend Coraline.

Fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride will enjoy this movie from Nightmare director Henry Selick.  And what’s a good movie without an earworm? While only 32 seconds long, They Might Be Giants’ “Other Father Song” will stick with you long after viewing.

Note: This may be a bit much for very little ones, so I would recommend watching it yourself first.
